Boats

Thursday 26th November

Today we had a go at making a simple mode of transport, in this session we were exploring means of communication. The boat as a mode of transport is itself a means of communication, but during the task we asked for different methods of communication to be explored, in the form of a manual to enable another group to be able to reconstruct the boat design.
The session began with a quick introduction to types of boats and what materials could be used to manufacture them.

Again there was wood, string, paper, metal, plastic, and cloth available to the groups, and as in the previous session the groups would be using materials relevant to their historical time.

Before we got into making the boats however Andy, gave a quick demonstration of communicating instructions, this was done by leading by example. The task was to make an Origami boat from a single sheet of A4 paper. There were no drawn or written instructions so everyone had to concentrate on all the different steps that Andy demonstrated.

These are instructions for how to make the boat

The next task was to make the boats out of the other materials, and put together some instruction for their construction. In the morning we also made some Iconic structures that would be relevant to the particular eras. The boats had to be designed to carry the materials for making these structures.

In the end we ran out of time for making both the boat and the iconic structure, so in the afternoon we decided to make just the boat, and all the groups managed to finish their constructions and do some instructions for them. Hopefully at some point we will be able to find some water and see if they float, or sink.

All the images above were made using two photographs, with the top one cut out into the shape of the boat or monument. This was done using Photoshop
